Small confession: I haven’t been reading much lately. It’s not that I don’t want to be reading, it’s just that I feel like I’ve been running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

Reading Lately: May 2018

April was crazy. I vlogged every day. (Have you seen all the videos yet?!) And then when April ended, May began, which meant that the semester was ending. And well, even though the semester ended Friday, here I am back at work teaching an intersession class. Oh, and did I mention that I spoke at OKC Litfest on Saturday?

So, I’m keeping busy.

But even so, I’m popping in here to share the books I’ve been reading lately. Here’s a look at all two books that I’ve picked up.

Reading Lately: May 2018

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

This is not a book that I would’ve normally picked up. But the cover was so enticing, and the cover copy hooked me good. The premise is that Alice’s grandmother is a quirky writer who wrote a cult classic book of fairytales and now lives in a big estate called the Hazel Wood. Alice and her mom live out of a car mostly, and avoid the Hazel Wood. Then, Alice gets word that her grandmother dies. That’s all I’ll share, in the interest of not spoiling the story. I’m not a huge fairytale fan. They mostly make me angry and I feel like the way things work out is incredibly arbitrary. But I did enjoy this book. If you’re in the market for a good escape, go ahead and pick it up.

How to Stop Feeling Like Shit by Andrea Owen

Like most 30-somethings, I’m working my way through the backlog of issues I have in order to be a better person, and this book has been part of the process. I’m working on ferreting out the numbing behaviors I have, and all the self-defeating behaviors that prevent me from getting what I want out of life. I recommend it highly to most women, and if you feel like you’ve got some stuff to work through, then pick this one up. The title makes it really fun to read in public.

What Have You Been Reading Lately?

Let me know the books that have kept you up at night. What books are in your TBR pile? I would ask for recommendations, but stuff is actually about to get even more busier, so save it for now and I’ll hit you up in 30 years when maybe there’s some downtime.

  1. I haven’t been reading lately and it’s driving me bonkers. Energy levels are picking up and staying consistent for the first time in months (years?) so that’s a good start. I’ll have to pick up How to Stop Feeling Like Shit. Right now I’m kicking myself because I feel like I’ve wasted the past 2 years being exhausted when all the while there was a medical reason for it. I realize shit happens, but when I realize I could have graduated by now but didn’t because of those health issues it’s a kick in the nuts (so to speak).

    1. Ugh. That’s rough. At least you have some answers for now, and everything seems to be getting better.

  2. I’ve been reading SO much lately. I just finished Mindy Kaling’s audiobook of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (super late on the boat to that one) and loved it. I just started The Wife Between Us and it’s great so far, and I’m about halfway through The Myth of the Nice Girl – since I’m focusing on my career this year, I’ve made it a goal to read six business books over the year, and this is my second.

    1. Oooh! I love that you’re reading business books! I’ll need to check out The Myth of the Nice Girl.
